Bay of Islands Singers - Choir in the Bay of Islands, Northland

About us

The Choir

The Bay of Islands Singers is a mixed-voice, non-auditioned, community choir of around 60 singers, based in Kerikeri, New Zealand. We usually give three performances per year with a repertoire that includes the best of sacred and secular choral works as well as spiritual and folk music, musical theatre and popular song (see Past Concerts). Our members are a cosmopolitan group with singers from America, Belgium, Germany and the UK joining the kiwi core. While we come from a wide variety of musical backgrounds all share a passion for singing and a commitment to work hard to offer the best possible musical experience to our audiences in the Far North.

The choir is certainly about singing and improving your voice and choral skills, but that’s not all. What keeps people coming, year in and year out, is that it’s a friendly and supportive community where firm friendships are made and a lot of fun is to be had. We hold regular social events, and fund-raising endeavours such as street-stalls are an opportunity for singers to work together in a common cause.

Our Charities Commission Registration Number is CC23401.

Musical Director - John Jackets

John has been involved in music and performance from an early age, first studying the piano followed by the violin and choral singing. For most of his adult life he has performed with choirs and instrumental groups in a wide range of musical repertoire from light opera to chamber music to large classical choral works. He was Director of the Serunai Singers chamber choir in Brunei Darussalam and founder of the Brunei Sinfonietta. His association with the Bay of Islands Singers goes back to the early 1990s and on his return to Kerikeri in 2007 he resumed as a choir member.

John was appointed Assistant Director in mid-2008 becoming Director in 2009. Under his direction the choir has performed in Kerikeri, Kaitaia and Whangarei in concerts including Bach’s Magnificat, Jenkins’ The Armed Man, Haydn Creation, Vivaldi and Rutter Gloria, and, on the lighter side, an Evening of American Music, G&S Trial by Jury and The Last Night of the Proms.

John is also a Trustee and Events Organiser for the Kerikeri International Piano Competition.
